How Much Does a Used Pool Table Cost?

Invest in a used pool table and enjoy the game without spending a fortune!

A well-maintained used pool table brings the same amount of fun and challenge as a brand new one.

A used Pool Table can cost anywhere between $300 and $3,000. The cost would depend on many different factors (such as the brand, condition, and age of the pool table).

It will also depend on the type of pool table (for example, a beginner pool bale will be cheaper than a mid-level or professional pool table)

Also, when buying a used pool table, keep in mind that there would be some additional cost once you buy the table (such as moving it, changing some parts – felt or pockets, etc.)

In this article, I will cover some factors to keep in mind when buying a pool table, and a rough estimate of the cost of various types of pool tables.

Used Pool Table Prices

Pool tables generally cost between $1,200 to $3500. Some tables may cost above or below this price range.

  • Basic entry-level pool tables cost between $1,200 to $2,000.
  • High-quality full slate pool tables cost between $2,000 to $3,500.
  • Some high-end pool tables with customizations or special features can cost as much as $15,000.
  • And, of course, antique pool tables often cost above $120,000.

Used pool tables usually cost somewhere half the price of the new table. But this could change depending on the age and condition of the table.

Take note that many used pool tables listed for sale come in subpar condition and may cost you a lot just replacing missing parts and in repairs.

While I will cover the different types of pool tables later in this article, below is a table that shows the market price of new as well as used tables.

What Factors Determine the Price of a Used Pool Table?

Whether you buy a brand new pool table or a used one, price variation plays a significant factor in your choice of the pool table.

When buying used pool tables, you may notice some tables from popular brands costing more than the others.

The points below will help you understand why this happens.

Branded Tables Cost More

When talking about pool tables, the brand names matter a lot.

Tables, whether new or used, made by established and respected brands generally cost more

Brands like Barrington and Olhausen produce tables with stylish woodwork and cost higher.

You can also find modestly-priced brands that sell decent entry-level pool tables on the market.

Make of the Table

A pool table’s woodwork represents one of the main reasons for its high pricing.

Some tables also come with intricate patterns and designs on the legs and rails, which further affects the price.

The type of wood used to make the table also affects its price. Also, if the wood type used possesses more grains, it indicates better quality wood and, therefore, costs more.

You can also find rare pool tables made of extinct/rare wood. Some customized pool table makers offer this as an option, although they cost a premium.

Year of Production

New pool tables on the market usually cost more.

The older a pool table model becomes, the lower its price falls (as it means increased wear-and-tear with time).

However, antique pool tables represent the only exception to this rule.

Size

The pool table size also determines its price. Small-sized English pool tables usually cost less than the larger 8-feet tables.

Custom-made table size prices vary according to the size of your room and what you ordered.

Quality and Layering of Slate

The prices of different pool tables may vary depending on whether the table comes with a 1-layered slate or a 3-layered slate.

Mostly, the 3-layered slate represents the better standard.

Slates made out of finely-milled rocks provide a better quality of playing and helps the table last longer. Currently, most pool tables come with the 3-layered slate type.

You can also opt for superb pool tables with multi-layered slates. However, these cost a lot more than average tables.

Quality and Condition of the Felt

Felt refers to the cloth wrapped over the slate.

The quality of felt determines how smoothly the balls roll over the table’s surface. Good quality felt provides a better playing experience.

The cost of felt also goes up with its quality.

Poor quality felt quickly wears off and needs replacement. We recommend purchasing good quality felt for your table to ensure longevity.

Cabinet

The cabinet protects the pool table’s side rails and pockets.

Although not an important factor, it still contributes significantly to the pricing.

Customers often ask for cabinets with unique colors and designs to match their home decor. This causes these customized cabinets to come at a high cost.

Installment and Transportation

When purchasing a brand new or used pool table, remember to check the cost of transportation.

Many sellers provide delivery services for their tables, although they charge for the same.

In the case of a used pool table, check to see if the seller included the cost of transportation in the asking price.

If not, you will need to pay for the transportation out of your pocket.

Portability

Although not ideal for professional games, foldable pool tables require very little space. Their foldability makes them easier to carry and store.

Foldable pool tables fall more on the convenient side than playability value, however.

Availability on the Market

Pool tables may become unavailable because of several factors. Pool tables brands stop the production of some types of tables.

Otherwise, the retailer may run out of stock of a particular table.

The price depends on these factors as much as any other.

You can make special orders for out-of-stock items. However, the brand may charge you separately for these orders.

Major Components as Price Factors

The pockets, cushions, and felt represent the three major components of a pool table that affect its price. Although easy to replace, you need to replace these components periodically.

Billiard cloth generally lasts for about 3 to 5 years with heavy use and 10 to 12 years with infrequent use.

The price of billiard cloth ranges between $150 to $600 depending on the type and size.

A pool table cushion rubber usually lasts between 25 to 50 years. With improper storage and misuse, this duration may become much shorter.

Cushion replacements come in sets and will require you to buy a full set even if you only need to replace one.

Look out for dried or cracked leather, ripped baskets, and damaged iron covers when checking the pockets.

You need to purchase replacement pockets in sets. A set of six replacement leather pockets usually cost between $250 to $500.

Types of Pool Tables

Pool tables fall into different categories based on their target users and prices. Below, we examine the various pool table types and their price range.

Toy Pool Tables

Toy pool tables usually cost between $500 to $1500. Ideal for children between the ages of 7 to 14, these tables serve as more of a learning platform.

Toy pool tables do not possess good durability because of the cheaper quality of materials used.

Often constituted of artificial materials like hardboard instead of slate and velvet in place of felt, toy pool tables do not cost much.

Expect to pay between $300 to $900 for decent used toy pool tables.

Beginner Pool Tables

People starting pool often play at a beginner pool table. Although not as expensive as other tables, it provides the same level of fun as other table types.

Beginner pool tables cost between $1,200 to $2,000. Well-maintained, used beginner pool tables may usually cost around $700 to $1,500.

Beginner pool tables last quite a long time because of their slate base and proper felt.

Also known as economic pool tables, they come in both foldable and non-foldable varieties.

Mid-level Pool Tables

Mid-level pool tables possess high-quality felt and excellent woodwork.

Pool table brands make sure their mid-level pool tables’ cushions and cabinets meet the governing authority’s standards for AAA gum cushions.

Mid-level pool tables may cost between $2,000 to $4,000. You can also find good-quality, some at prices from $1,500 to $3,000.

Mid-level pool types come in different sizes of 7 feet, 8 feet, or 9 feet. These tables also come with exquisite features to match your home decor

Professional Pool Tables

Professional pool tables represent the best type of pool table you can find. The hype around pool games generally arises based on the type of table used.

These tables possess durable, superb woodwork. From the rail work to the felt, everything about these tables screams fabulous.

Professional pool tables can set you back by as much as $4,000 to over $20,000. Even used ones usually cost anywhere between $3,500 to $15,000.

With several top brands working on these tables, it stands to reason that they cost as much as they do.

When professional competition organizers use a particular brand’s table, it causes that table’s value to increase.

Usually, the organizers choose the best, and these tables command the highest prices as well.

Customized Pool Tables

Pool table companies often cater to customers’ demands for customized pool tables. Expect professional workmanship and the highest quality materials in these tables.

Manufacturers design these tables based on the customer’s style, design, and color preferences. Companies take care to look into every detail with these tables.

Customized pool tables usually cost above $10,000. Finding a used customized pool table on the market represents a difficult task and may cost you more than $10,000.

Antique Pool Tables

Exquisitely designed and crafted, antique pool tables represent heirlooms kept in families for generations.

These tables may measure anywhere between 7 to 10 feet. Some of these tables also measure 11 feet.

Artistic and heavy, these tables cost well over $10,000. Some tables may even cost over $20,000.

Consider yourself lucky if you happen to come across one of these in used pool tables listings.
